Background of the Study
Zoonotic diseases are infections that are transmitted from animals to humans, and their emergence has become a significant global health concern in recent decades. The impact of zoonotic diseases, such as Ebola, avian influenza, and COVID-19, has underscored the need for healthcare workers, including nurses, to be adequately prepared for early detection, response, and containment. Cross River State, located in southeastern Nigeria, is home to a rich biodiversity and a variety of animals, which increases the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. Given the frequent interaction between humans and animals in this region, especially in rural areas, the likelihood of emerging zoonotic diseases affecting the population remains high.
Healthcare workers, particularly nurses, play a crucial role in identifying, managing, and preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases in hospitals and communities. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients with symptoms of such diseases, and their ability to recognize these conditions early, implement preventive measures, and educate the public is vital in reducing the spread of these diseases. However, despite the importance of their role, there is limited research on nurses' awareness of emerging zoonotic diseases and their preparedness to respond to such public health threats in Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
This study aims to assess the level of awareness among nurses regarding emerging zoonotic diseases, their preparedness to manage such diseases, and the effectiveness of response strategies at Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
The emergence of zoonotic diseases presents significant public health challenges, especially in regions with high animal-human interactions. Despite the critical role of nurses in managing these diseases, there is limited information on their awareness and preparedness to handle emerging zoonotic diseases at Cross River State Teaching Hospital. Inadequate awareness, insufficient training, and poor preparedness may lead to delayed responses and increased transmission of these diseases.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses' awareness of emerging zoonotic diseases at Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate the preparedness of nurses in handling emerging zoonotic diseases at Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
3. To identify challenges nurses face in responding to zoonotic disease outbreaks at Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of awareness among nurses regarding emerging zoonotic diseases at Cross River State Teaching Hospital?
2. How prepared are nurses at Cross River State Teaching Hospital to respond to emerging zoonotic diseases?
3. What challenges do nurses face in managing zoonotic disease outbreaks at Cross River State Teaching Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Cross River State Teaching Hospital have limited awareness of emerging zoonotic diseases.
2. Nurses at Cross River State Teaching Hospital are inadequately prepared to respond to emerging zoonotic diseases.
3. Factors such as inadequate training, insufficient resources, and poor communication hinder nurses' preparedness in responding to zoonotic diseases at Cross River State Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Cross River State Teaching Hospital and will evaluate their awareness and preparedness in responding to emerging zoonotic diseases. Limitations may include self-reporting bias and the potential for variability in preparedness levels based on different nursing units within the hospital.
Definitions of Terms
• Zoonotic Diseases: Diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans, such as Ebola, rabies, and COVID-19.
• Awareness: The degree to which nurses are informed about the nature, symptoms, transmission, and prevention of emerging zoonotic diseases.
• Preparedness: The ability of nurses to respond effectively to zoonotic disease outbreaks, including having the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to manage these diseases.
